Students will step back in time aboard the real sailing ship, Duyfken, where she is berthed at AQWA's private Marina from April to October! Then continue to explore our ocean, from the shores to the depths, on an underwater journey through AQWA's 40+ exhibits! This excursion package is an exclusive offer for WA schools visiting Monday-Friday in school term. Excludes public and school holidays.

This package includes:

• The Duyfken Educational Experience – trained school guides will bring history alive, as students tour the replica ship as it floats in AQWA's Marina.

• Full entry to AQWA and all exhibits

Your experience highlights:

The Duyfken school guides offer an interactive educational experience aboard the ship and within the outdoor historical 'classroom', filled with historical marine artefacts. On board, Duyfken students will become crew members of a Dutch trading ship about to voyage south in search of spices and other treasures. They will be encouraged to take charge of their own learning through questioning, analysing, evaluating, reflecting and problem solving, all of which will promote further research back in the classroom.

Once your school group has completed the Duyfken Experience, students are welcome to make their way around all of the exhibits that AQWA has to offer. Enjoy the free scheduled talks and feeds as well as the 100 metre underwater tunnel.

The Duyfken story:

The Duyfken replica sailing ship was built in Fremantle, with her official launching in January 1999. As a ‘living’ museum, the ship’s role has been to tell the story of the original Duyfken, the first European sailing ship to record making landfall with the Australian continent in 1606. Today, Duyfken serves as an engaging, floating classroom, offering an educational program that aligns with the HASS section of the WA Curriculum that has a focus on History – First Contact; Civics and Citizenship; and Geography.

Making your booking:

Please note there is a maximum of 36 participants allowed on the Duyfken Ship at any one time. It is recommended this includes:

  • Max of 30 students with 6 adults for Year K-3.
  • Max of 32 students with 4 adults for Year 4-12.

When making your booking, please select the total number of students in each year who will likely be attending the excursion and work out your total amount of FREE supervising teachers/helpers, using the following ratios:

KINDY to YEAR 3 -  1:5 (a minimum of 1 supervising adult is required and free per 5 students EG 30 students = 6 adults)

YEAR 4 to  YEAR 12 - 1:7 (a minimum of 1 supervising adult is required and free per 7 students EG 28 students = 4 adults)

If you wish to bring additional teachers/parent helpers on the excursion that are not included in the Free of Charge ratios, then you can purchase additional concession Entry and Ship Tour tickets at the discounted rate of just $27 as part of your excursion booking. Keep in mind the maximum capacity of 36 participants aboard the Duyfken per session. This means if the capacity is already met by students and free teachers/helpers, additional parent helpers will only be permitted at the discretion of the Duyfken team and this can be discussed upon booking confirmation.
